"Mom to dilate,
Baby to rotate"
Dr. Sarah Mickeler
Fetal positioning is an important factor during labour and birth as the baby must rotate through the pelvis while the mother dilate's. The optimal fetal position is Left Occiput Anterior (LOA) with the chin tucked in towards the chest.
Reasons LOA is the Optimal Fetal Position for Birthing
Babies can be born in other positions, it just might take a little longer. The flexion of the chin is more important then the fetus's position. Often when the chin is not tucked in enough the delivery could end up being a caesarean section.
